Why switch to Matomo?

For three reasons you will notice in the first month: the data is yours, it is not sampled, and you can measure without cookies.

Let me explain. With Google Analytics 4 you do not own the data — you have access to it. Google decides how much history to keep, samples when volume rises, and forces you to depend on cookie consent, which in practice means losing between a third and half of your visits depending on the sector. With Matomo the data lives on your server or one of your choosing, it is kept in full, and it can be configured in cookieless mode — exempt from a consent banner.

That said, it is not all advantages: Matomo requires maintenance, and for advertising integrations GA4 remains more convenient. We tell you that before migrating, not afterwards.

What do you gain by measuring with Matomo?

Essentially, you recover the portion of reality you are currently not seeing. Here are the concrete effects:

Complete data, not a sample. Matomo does not sample, so your reports match reality even when traffic rises.

Measurement without a cookie banner. In cookieless mode you recover the traffic you are currently losing through consent rejection. It is the reason most of our clients end up migrating.

Compliance without surprises. The data never leaves your infrastructure, which considerably simplifies the conversation with your data protection officer.

History that never expires. You will be able to compare with three years ago without anyone having deleted the data under a retention policy.

How do we handle the deployment?

With the same rule we apply across all our digital analytics work: verify first, measure second, and never take a figure at face value without cross-checking it against a second source.

Diagnosis. We review what you measure today, what you are losing through consent, and what decisions you need to be able to make. Without this, migrating is just swapping tools and keeping the problem.

Deployment and tagging. Installation, goal and event configuration, and ecommerce if applicable. We run Matomo alongside whatever you already have for a few weeks — it is the only way to check the deviation between both and know how much traffic you had been missing.

Reports and training. Dashboards built around what your business decides, and a session with your team — because a tool only the agency understands is not much use.

Frequently Asked Questions

For data ownership and for what you stop losing.

Without mixing things up: GA4 is free, powerful and tightly integrated with the Google ecosystem, and for many businesses it is enough. Matomo costs money and requires maintenance, but it gives you back three things GA4 does not: data ownership, no sampling, and the option to measure without consent.

I would recommend deciding based on your case, not on ideology. If your traffic is high, if consent is eating half your visits, or if your sector is sensitive about data protection, Matomo usually pays for itself. If not, it may not be worth the switch.

Yes. It integrates with Google Tag Manager, with behavioural tools such as heatmaps, and with external dashboards via API, in addition to its own built-in ones.

The honest nuance is in advertising: the native integration with Google Ads is not the same as GA4’s. That is why in accounts with heavy ad spend we usually keep both running, each for what it does best.

Between one and three weeks for a corporate site. An ecommerce with a large catalogue and complex goals runs to four or five.

That is why we always leave a coexistence period with your previous tool. It is not excessive caution — the deviation between the two is precisely the most interesting data point of the entire migration, because it tells you how much you had been missing.

Yes, and that is where much of the value lies. Custom dimensions, your own goals, funnels, ecommerce tracking, and dashboards built around your decisions rather than the metrics the tool ships with by default.

Yes. Matomo can be configured to measure without cookies, and in that mode European regulations do not require a consent banner for analytics.

The practical result is that you recover visits you are simply not counting today. How many depends on your audience — in the projects we have migrated the difference has always been significant, and in some sectors it has completely changed the reading of the channel.

One honest caveat: without cookies you lose precision in recognising returning users. You gain real volume and lose some detail in cross-session tracking. For most businesses the trade-off is worthwhile, but it is worth knowing.
